Measuring four metres across, it is the largest in the country and was created by more than 15 flower arrangers, according to York Minster.

School children from Minister School York in central York, gathered in the cathedral as some of the pupils helped placed one metre candles into the wreath.

It will be displayed until Epiphany on 6th January.

Around 2,000 candles will be used to illuminate the Nave on Sunday when the cathedral holds its much-loved Advent Procession.

The service will mark the start of the Advent season at the Minster, and is the first in a series of special services taking place during December.

The cathedral starts in darkness before a single flame is used to spread light throughout the congregation, with each person holding a candle and passing the flame to their neighbour, as York Minster's clergy and choir process down the Nave from the Great West Doors.

Rev Canon Peter Moger, Precentor at York Minster said: "The Advent Procession is one of the most popular and visually stunning services in the Christian calendar."
