Vicar backs study that says West Sussex is best for a happy retirement

by Tola Mbakwe

Places in southern and eastern England dominated the top 10 list, with Dorset, East Sussex, Devon, Norfolk and Suffolk also identified as hotspots.

Rev Wingman Tsang, vicar of Queen Street Church in Worthing, West Sussex told Premier that the area is definitely worthy of the accolades.

He said: "Worthing certainly is, like a lot of seaside towns in the south.

"It enjoys lots of sunshine, there's a more relaxed pace of life compared to lots of cities, and there are a lot of facilities available.

"Chichester Cathedral is nearby, Brighton Marina and with Brighton there are a lot of places to visit. There's a lot of visitors in the summer without a lot of traffic jams."

Rev Tsang told Premier he moved to West Sussex to lead a church and was only supposed to be there for seven years. But so far he's been there for more than 12 because he loves the people and the area.

He added: "There are over 60 churches in Worthing, a lot of care homes around the seaside, lots of good care in Worthing Hospital and other surrounding hospitals.

"There are good facilities and it's also a place if you're Christian you can visit a variety of churches to suit your style and characteristics. God is here."

Prudential's rankings are based on eight sets of recently published data which it has identified as indicators of a happy and comfortable retirement for each of the 55 counties in England and Wales:

" Resident pensioners as a proportion of county's population
" Disability-free life expectancy
" Access to healthcare
" Crime levels
" The number of pensioners moving to the county
" Pension income
" Weather
" Healthy lifestyle data

The study also revealed that pensioners in Surrey have the highest income, those in Essex enjoy the best weather and retirees in Gwynedd enjoy the best access to healthcare.
