Vatican pays tribute to cricketer Phillip Hughes

The Australian batsman collapsed on field after being struck on the back of the neck by a ball during a match. It's claimed he never regained consciousness.

Australian team doctor Peter Brukner said he was not in pain before he passed and was surrounded by his family and close friends.

Following his death, people around the world paid tribute by taking a picture of their cricket bat and posting it on the social networking site.

Cardinal Gianfranco Ravasi tweeted the picture along with details of a special mass taking place at the Vatican for all those in the world of sport who have died.

Twenty five year old Phillip Hughes made his Test debut in February 2009 as one of the youngest ever players to play his first match for his country.

In 26 Tests, he scored 1,535 runs with three centuries and seven fifties. He played his final Test at Lord's in London in July 2013.

His funeral is due to take place on Wednesday.
