Vatican donates to 2,700 Haitian families

by Hannah Tooley

£80,000 has been given to help victims of the storm rebuild their lives.

The Pontifical Council Cor Unum has given the money to be distributed through the hardest-hit dioceses, according to the Vatican.

It will used to "support aid works in favour of flood victims, and is intended as a first and immediate concrete expression of the sentiments of spiritual closeness and paternal encouragement of the Supreme Pontiff with regard to the afflicted persons and territories."

The Vatican said it expects the money will immediately help around 2,700 families (13,500 people), buying and distributing 2,700 food kits and hygiene kits.

Hurricane Matthew killed almost 1000 people and displaced thousands more Haitians, who were already giving in poverty following a devastating earthquake in the country in 2010.
