UK Christian rapper Guvna B wins his third MOBO award

by Kelly Valencia

Christian rapper Guvna B has won a MOBO award for best gospel artist, making him the British artist with the most MOBO awards in the gospel act category.

The awards recognise and celebrate black music and culture.

“It’s a bit surreal to be honest,” Guvna B told Premier.

“I think what was interesting is, that there’s seem to be a bit more significance around the gospel award from the more mainstream categories and personalities because of how uplifting the music is and Its just felt really special to be a part of,” he continued.

This is the third time the rapper scooped Best Gospel Act - after winning the same prize in 2016 and in 2010.

When asked about what the awards meant to him, the 32-year-old said that although they didn’t “validate him” he does think they are a “cool symbolism of hard work”.

“It just is a reminder that you carried through but there's more work to do. So, I really appreciate them.”

Reacting to the news, the director of Premier Gospel, Muyiwa Olarewaju MBE praised Guvna B for being so “unapologetically Christian”.

“In his interview on TV last night he didn't shy away from representing Jesus. A lot of artists…get into a space where they now become nervous about saying this because they think it's going to hurt their brand. But Guvna B's never been like that, he's doesn't really shy away from it.”

Guvna B had this message for any upcoming artist.

“I think the kind of significant thing I've been thinking about recently is the beauty of collaboration and working together with people from slightly different worship expressions and showing and modelling real unity within the church. I think there's power and strength in numbers.

“I'd say bring people in, learn from each other, work really hard and trust in the path that God has laid out for you.”
