Two pastors and a Christian activist arrested in Sudan

The whereabouts of all three detainees remains unknown but local sources have claimed that the clergyman were taken by members of the National Intelligence and Security services and that no reasons were given for their arrests.

One of the clergy, Revd Kwa Shamal also had his church building demolished in the summer with only 24 hours of verbal notice and arrests such as these are reported symptomatic of ongoing restrictions on the rights and freedoms of Sudan's religious minorities. In this context, the Christian community in Sudan is a primary target.

Christian Solidarity Worldwide's Chief Executive Mervyn Thomas said that they were deeply concerned by the coordinated arrests and claimed that "these men were arrested without charge and are being detained incommunicado in direct violation of their right to liberty and security of person."

The organisation's called for their immediate and unconditional release as well as the support of the international Christian community.
