Syrian church shelled amid ceasefire

by Aaron James

Christians part of the church in Kinsibba near the Syria-Turkey border gathered to pick up shattered glass and cement before praying for the area.

The shelling came as journalists from across the world were visiting the area as part of a trip organised by Russian authorities, who were also providing food and medical aid.

Journalists and locals were injured in the shelling, but there were no fatalities.

The Russian military has said the shelling came from the extremist group The Nusra Front.

It's been four days since a ceasefire between the Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's government forces and moderate opposition groups including the Free Syrian Army, however, the cessation of hostilities does not include Islamist groups like Islamic State and the Nusra Front.

Russia's defence ministry has said the ceasefire has been violated 15 times in the past 24 hours.

The ministry said most of the violations were recorded around Damascus, Aleppo, Homs and Latakia.

It said the Nusra Front and the Islamic State group has been attacking government positions and residential areas from territory controlled by the Syrian opposition.

Russia has also been accused of violating the ceasefire by Saudi Arabia.
