Syrian and Iraqi Christians plead for help

The militant group took over a number of Assyrian villages in Syria's Hassakeh province last month, taking at least 220 Christians hostage.

IS forced hundreds of Christians to flee their homes in the villages and head to Lebanon to seek refuge.

The group of believers spoke to reporters as they queued at two Beirut churches for food and other humanitarian assistance.

They were given aid by an organisation called In Defence of Christians (IDC), which aims to protect believers living in the Middle East.

According to the Press Association Alexi Moukarzel, the IDC representative in Beirut, said Christians are being pushed out of their land and their "identity is being broken".

Iman Chamoun, a 42-year-old woman, said: "They took everything, the house, furniture, they even took the doors. The work of 25 years was lost in one minute. It's like living a dream, a nightmare.

"But we are Christians, despite everything we give thanks to God."
