Syria Christians turned away at US airport

by Aaron James

According to CNN, the six unnamed family members of Sarmad (below, right) and Sarah Assali (below, left) were turned away at Philadelphia International Airport on Saturday after travelling from the Syrian capital Damascus.

It comes after US president Donald Trump signed an executive order temporarily banning people from seven mainly Muslim countries from entering America for 90 days, while the US formulates stronger visa checks.

The two brothers along with their wives and children had been waiting almost 15 years to be in the same country as Sarmad and Sarah Assali. All of their documents had been approved and a house was waiting for them on arrival.

Their rejection from the US comes despite President Trump promising Christian refugees would have priority amid his immigration clampdown.

Sarah told Newsworks: Sarah, 25, said to Newsworks: "We weren't expecting this because we paid everything.

"The green cards have been paid for, the visas have been paid for, everything has been approved.

"To suddenly be told, 'no, you no longer qualify to enter the country,' it kind of comes as a slap in the face."

Donald Trump defended his policies on immigration today, saying: "To be clear, this is not a Muslim ban, as the media is falsely reporting.

"This is not about religion - this is about terror and keeping our country safe.

"My policy is similar to what President Obama did in 2011 when he banned visas for refugees from Iraq for six months."

He added the US would continue to show "compassion to those fleeing oppression".

Meanwhile protests including Christians( for example a nun, below) have been happening across America against the travel ban, with several also scheduled in the UK.

And the Catholic Archbishop of Chicago, Blase Cupich, issued a statement condemning Trump's immigration policies.

Cardinal Blase said: "This weekend proved to be a dark moment in U.S. history.

"The executive order... is contrary to both Catholic and American values. Ironically, this ban does not include the home country of 15 of the 19 September 11 hijackers.

"The world is watching as we abandon our commitments to American values. These actions give aid and comfort to those who would destroy our way of life.

"Pope Francis issued these challenging words to Congress in 2015, and followed with a warning that should haunt us as we come to terms with the events of the weekend: 'The yardstick we use for others will be the yardstick which time will use for us'."
