Survivor outlines scale of abuse problem

by Aaron James

The Christian woman, who only wants to be known as Angela, also says the government needs to do more to help those who've suffered, and that waiting lists for treatment are far too long.

She made the comments after a government advisor said up to eleven million people in the UK could have been abused, and not reported it.

The advisor, Graham Wilmer, says support groups for people who've been abused are experiencing a 'tsunami' of people coming for support, and experts are now dealing with a 'national health epidemic'.

Angela told Premier: "People do not come forward. They do keep quiet about what's happened.

"People do look at you differently, when you say that you've been abused. It's not easy to say you've been abused. It's very courageous for people who do.

"They can help people. Just by sharing what they go through, helps other people to know they're not alone.

"There are not enough resources to help people who go through abuse.

"They need a lot of counselling, they need a lot of help to rebuild their lives.

"There isn't that much help, and the help that there is - there's a long waiting list.

"People who are suffering like that, they can't always wait for a year, a year and a half, to be seen by someone for only six weeks. They need long term counselling and support."
