Statue for "Jesus Man" of Bradford

by Hannah Tooley

Geoffrey Brindley, known as "Jesus Man" in the city, died at the age of 88 after suffering a stroke.

He was known in the area for walking around wearing robes and sandals and began his transformation into "Jesus Man" in the 1960's.

He left his job as a machinist in the Yorkshire Dales to receive 'a message from God' and went to live in a cave for almost 12 days, according to the Daily Mail.

During his early life as a Christian, Mr Brindley is thought to have been arrested for causing a breach of the peace outside a bingo club whilst preaching about gambling and protesting about a Beatles concert.

He walked the city for more than 50 years and locals created a blog, Facebook and Twitter account documenting his whereabouts and stories.

In 2013 Mr Brindley was asked why he walks the city, his answer: "I just like walking."

It has been reported that he would tell people who asked that he was "looking for an answer."

Residents even had an online map where they documented where he was seen.

Tributes to "Jesus Man" were led by the Bishop of Bradford, Rt Revd Dr Toby Howarth, who said: "We are grateful for his life and all that he meant for many people in Bradford."

Locals have raised around £2,000 to give him a fitting funeral in the cathedral and build a statue to him.
