The free app, Patrum, shows off a selection of works at the Vatican Museum, from an Etruscan tomb to 13th-century Chinese scrolls.
App users can even engage in conversations and comment on artefacts.
Art enthusiasts can create their own profiles and display their favourite works. They will receive updates about their favourite exhibitions and can chat with other users who have 'liked' the same pieces of work, according to The Washington Post.
The app is designed to encourage users to donate as well, and funding goals are shown next to images and descriptions of areas of the holy city that need work.
A new display for the vestments of Pope Clement VII will cost $191,750 (around £123,000), for example.
The app can be downloaded on any smartphone device.
