Ghazi Hassan's seven-seater Vauxhall Zafira disappeared inside the hole which randomly appeared outside Benefice of Charlton St Thomas' Church in Greenwich.
Mr Hassan said: "In life you have good days and bad days.
"This morning wasn't a good day."
Rev Erica Wooff, the rector of Charlton, said her initial reaction was: "Oh my goodness, there's a hole in the road."
"There was a massive storm last night. It has been raining constantly for the past two days but I didn't hear tarmac rip open.
"I've been here for eight years, I've never seen anything like this."
A Royal Borough of Greenwich Council spokesman said: "The hole is stable at this time, and while there will need to be further investigations to establish the cause, the geology in the area is sand/gravel and there is nothing to indicate that the collapse is related to old mine workings."
The Hassan's car is insured and it has been removed from the sinkhole on the second attempt.
