The Bishop of Lincoln has announced that The King has officially approved the nomination of the Rev Canon Dr Simon Jones as the next Dean of Lincoln, marking a significant moment for the Cathedral of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Lincoln.
In a statement on Diocese of Lincoln website, the Rt Rev Stephen Conway, the Bishop of Lincoln, expressed his delight and anticipation for Dr Jones's leadership, acknowledging his profound impact during his tenure as Interim dean: "Simon’s ministry at Merton has made Chapel life vibrant and engaging. His pastoral heart and wisdom have significantly contributed to college welfare," he wrote.
He also highlighted Dr Jones's passion for the Gospel and his expertise as a liturgist, eagerly anticipating the contributions he will bring to both the Cathedral and his senior priest role within the diocese.
Upon reflecting on his new appointment, Dr Jones shared his enthusiasm and sense of calling to this position: "Serving as Interim Dean last year was an immensely positive experience, fostering a deep sense of calling to this magnificent Cathedral and community," he noted. He also expressed gratitude for the support that bolstered his decision to embrace this new chapter after two decades at Merton College, Oxford.
Dr Jones will be relocating from Oxford, where he serves as chaplain and fellow of Merton College, alongside his civil partner, Canon Darren McFarland.
The installation ceremony for the new Dean of Lincoln is scheduled for Saturday 14th September 2024 at Lincoln Cathedral, with more details to follow later in the year.
