Christian charity: "Every child needs compassion" after report reveals disabled Ukrainian children left abandoned

by Alex Collett

There are claims that thousands of disabled Ukrainian children have been abandoned in institutions, where carers have fled in fear of Russian conflict.

An investigation by the Human Rights Organisation and Disability Right International has found that children's homes are overrun and unable to cope.

Distressing footage has been released by the BBC from an all-girls institute in Ukraine.

Fiona Gosden from Christian charity Through the Roof told Premier the footage was difficult to watch: "You can see how anxious and distressed these children are, it shows some girls teeth grinding and rocking back and forth.

"These children have been left, they've been abandoned and this is clearly going to have a very distressing effect on them.

"Every child needs compassion, there is no dignity here.

"They need to be shown dignity as anyone else would."

Fiona spoke of the ways the charity is helping disabled people in Ukraine: "Through the Roof have a partner who is working in Ukraine at the moment.

"They are taking mobility aids to support disabled people there.

"There needs to be more staff supporting these children."

Fiona feels it is vital as Christians to be praying for the situation: "I think as Christians, we all have a really important part to play here and that is prayer.

"I really feel we need to ask God to break our heart for what is happening and to pray, specifically for the disabled people there.

"We really need God's compassion of Jesus in this situation, while there are staff shortages."
