Queen visits St Columba's Church

by Hannah Tooley

The royal pair attended a reception to celebrate the Sixtieth anniversary of the re-dedication of the church building.

The original St Columba's Church of 1884 was destroyed in May 1941 during wartime bombing and it was rebuilt on the same site with a new, modern design.

Work on the new Church of Scotland building began in summer 1950 when Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother laid the foundation stone, and in 1955 the new St. Columba's was finally dedicated.

The Queen met with locals and chatted to members of the church during the visit on Thursday evening.
