The idea - proposed by Bristol Magistrate Ian Abrahams - is being considered by the Magistrates' Association.
He's suggesting Holy books are removed and a secular pledge is said instead.
Alison Ruoff is a Church of England General Synod Member and served as a magistrate for 24 years.
She told Premier's News Hour she's not impressed by the idea.
The Ministry of Justice said it has no plans to change the current arrangements.
