A Texas school principal has resigned following controversy over the distribution of Qurans and materials about Sharia law and hijabs.
The ‘Why Islam?’ event, co-ordinated for World Hijab Day by the Muslim Students Association, received backlash from Wylie East High School parents and national media attention.
One Christian student organised a Bible handout in response, with others holding signs that read “Bibles not Qurans”.
Tiffany Doolan, who had worked in the school district for 19 years, has stepped down from her post, as reported by The Christian Post.
Wylie Independent School District said that “serious mistakes had been made” and measures have been taken to stop it happening again, but denied the school had been promoting Islam, ideology or political view.
In a letter to parents, Doolan said: “Over the last several weeks, I've spent a lot of time praying and reflecting about what is best for my family, and ultimately, I've decided this is the best decision for us. As I've thought about what I wanted to say in this letter, I kept coming back to gratitude.
“Thank you for trusting me to lead this school and for allowing me to serve your family. As a principal and a parent, I know there is no greater responsibility than being entrusted with someone else's child, and I have never taken that responsibility lightly.”
