Presbyterian Church in Ireland launches 'safeguarding roadshows' following policy reform

by Milton Dunleavy

The Presbyterian Church in Ireland (PCI) has launched its first series of ‘Safeguarding Roadshows’, aimed at equipping leaders across the denomination with the latest safeguarding guidance for children and adults.

PCI Safeguarding Lead Jayne Bellingham said the initiative is an important step in implementing the Church’s updated safeguarding policies.

“I hope as many as possible take the opportunity to take part, as it is an important opportunity to hear how safeguarding is changing in PCI,” she said.

The roadshow is designed for those responsible for safeguarding in PCI’s 500-plus congregations.

The first series of nine information evenings began last week in Bangor and will travel across Counties Antrim, Cavan, Derry/Londonderry, Donegal, Fermanagh, Tyrone, and conclude in Lucan, County Dublin, at the end of February.

Bellingham highlighted the success of the opening session. “We had a great turn out, nearly 100 people in Bangor," she said. "It was an invaluable time of information sharing, roundtable discussion, Q&As, feedback, and prayer. It was also a great demonstration of the commitment to safeguarding in our local churches."

The sessions are part of preparations for major safeguarding changes to come into effect next month in Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland, following new policies approved by the 2025 General Assembly.

She also outlined a wider programme of support: online seminars, increased training sessions, videos, and a safeguarding conference later in 2026.

“We know that our designated persons and liaison persons are central to the success of safeguarding across our denomination. All are volunteers, working quietly and tirelessly to ensure the safety of children and adults, and I can’t thank them enough.”

The roadshows follow a period of reflection and reform after the discovery of serious safeguarding failings in PCI’s central administration, which led to the standing down of former Moderator Dr Trevor Gribben and a Special General Assembly in December 2025.

Immediate past Moderator Dr Richard Murray has since returned to office and has led the Church’s ongoing response.
