The Bishop of Thetford has led a special prayer service, following a week of violence and unrest in the town.

Rt Revd Ian Bishop condemned the recent scenes of disorder, sparked by migrants being housed on an estate, calling them "indefensible and deeply distressing."

On Wednesday, police officers faced hostility from protestors, with one being hit by a rock, another bitten on the arm and left with a "really nasty wound," and a third spat at. Two officers required hospital treatment but are now "on the road to recovery," according to Norfolk Police Chief Constable Paul Sanford.

Police also criticised protesters for attempting to "kick down doors" of properties believed to house asylum seekers.

"Officers faced a level of violence that they simply shouldn't," Chief Constable Sanford told Sky News. He noted that the majority of people were "protesting lawfully" but "there was a significant minority who went way, way too far and brought crime on to the streets".
