He will visit Genoa and Milan, two cities he was meant to make trips to last year, but cancelled owing a busy Jubilee Year of Mercy schedule.
Both of those diocese are led by cardinals that are reaching retirement age.
Cardinal Angelo Scola, the Archbishop of Milan said the visit represented "a sign of closeness and esteem for the Church of Saint Ambrose, for the Metropolitan Church of Milan and for the entire region of Lombardia."
He said he was pleased the pope would "confirm us in our faith."
The Archbishop of Genoa and President of the Italian Bishops' Conference, Cardinal Angelo Bagnasco, has said the visit to his region will be "a particularly lovely event, which will help us, sustain us and encourage us."
Cardinal Angelo Scola will celebrate his 75th birthday next months and will soon retire, and Cardinal Angelo Bagnasco will turn 75 next year.
The pope has traveled to a number of countries since becoming leader of the Catholics in 2013, including; Cuba, the USA, Central African Republic, Armenia, Poland and the Philippines.
