Speaking to a group of Christian socialists from France Pope Francis said: "Europe is the only continent that can bring some sort of unity to the world."
Christians from France spoke with Pope Francis about politics and had wide-ranging discussions where the pontiff said Europe has "a universal role to serve the cause of world unity.
"To serve that cause, however, the Pope went on to say that Europe must "rediscover its cultural roots."
Pope Francis argued that nationalists that took an anti-immigration stand were wrong and that Europe needed to unite, saying that historically Europe has always been culturally diverse.
Speaking about France's political situation specifically, he said the country's push for secularism is "incomplete" and said France needs to embrace spirituality and religion.
