Pilgrims embark on walk to Paris to mark world conference on climate change

by Hannah Tooley

Pilgrimage2Paris leaves St-Martin-in-the-Fields Church on Friday to arrive in the French city, which is hosting the COP21 talks, in two weeks.

The pilgrimage is designed to explore the issues surrounding the upcoming UN Climate Change Conference from a faith perspective.

In December negotiators from more than 190 nations will gather together to discuss a new global agreement on climate change aimed at limiting greenhouse gas emissions from 2020 when current commitments run out.

Some of the UK's leading Christian organisations; the Church of England, Christian Aid, Tearfund and CAFOD, are behind the campaign.

Pilgrims from across the UK are joining together to call on world leaders to agree to what they call a fair, ambitious and binding climate change deal in Paris.

The Bishop of Salisbury Nick Holtam, the lead Bishop on the Environment for the Church of England and Edward Mason, Head of Responsible Investment for the Church of England are involved.

On Friday songs are prayers are being shared with the pilgrims before they embark on their long walk.

Listen to Premier's Hannah Tooley speak to Revd Giles Goddard, who's on the pilgrimage, here:
