Orthodox Christians have marked epiphany by plunging into icy waters.

The Orthodox Church commemorates the Feast of Epiphany on January 19, and churchgoers weren’t put off by the freezing temperatures.

Photos show people jumping into icy waterways in Russia and Ukraine to mark the occasion, symbolic of Christ being baptised in the River Jordan and revealing himself as the son of God.

Temperatures reached -24 celsius at points, reaching -13 at the warmest part of the day.

Celebrations took place across the world, making for striking photos.
