Photos show crowds gathered in Bethlehem to mark Orthodox Easter

by Sophie Drew

Orthodox Christians in Bethlehem are marking Easter with the arrival of a torch bearing flames ignited from the fire in Christ’s tomb.

The tradition sees people light torches and lanterns from a central fire in Jerusalem, taking the light of Christ back to their towns and villages.

This is called 'the Ceremony of the Holy Fire.'

There, people will light their candles using the torch, and the symbolism will continue to spread throughout the area.

The candles are then placed in homes, celebrating the resurrection.

Many have kept their homes dark since Good Friday, in a period of mourning.

In Bethlehem, crowds gathered to mark the tradition.
