Pastor John MacArthur dies aged 86 after battle with pneumonia

by Tola Mbakwe

Renowned pastor and author John MacArthur has died at the age of 86 following a battle with pneumonia.

MacArthur, who served as senior pastor of Grace Community Church in Sun Valley since 1969, passed away after being hospitalised in recent days.

"This evening, his faith became sight," read a statement from his media ministry, Grace to You on X. "He faithfully endured until his race was run."

A respected theologian and teacher, MacArthur's preaching drew thousands to his California church for five decades. He also founded The Master’s Seminary and served as president of The Master’s University.

His influence extended across the globe through his sermons, literature, and broadcasts. MacArthur authored nearly 400 books and study resources, many of which have been translated into more than 25 languages.

He made headlines in 2020 for defying Covid19 restrictions in California, continuing to hold in-person worship despite state mandates, citing the importance of religious freedom.

In recent years, MacArthur faced ongoing health challenges, including heart and lung issues and several surgeries.

On Sunday, associate pastor Tom Patton told the congregation that MacArthur’s condition had worsened and that he might be “in the presence of the Lord soon.”

Many Christian leaders have paid tribute, including US pastor Greg Laurie, who posted on X: "I had the privilege of knowing John personally, and I can tell you—he was a true man of God. He spoke at our church several times over the years, and it was always a joy to spend time with him. John leaves behind a powerful legacy: his beloved family, his faithful congregation, his far-reaching media ministry, and of course, his epic library of biblical commentaries that will continue to impact generations.

"But above all, his greatest legacy is this—he lived a life well-lived. He was faithful to the very end. He will be deeply missed, but I’m confident he has already heard those words we all long to hear: “Well done, good and faithful servant. Enter into the joy of your Lord.” (Matt. 25:23)

MacArthur is survived by his wife, Patricia, their four children, and fifteen grandchildren
