Pakistan: Dozens of Christians dead after drinking homemade alcohol

by Antony Bushfield

Police said the brew had made several people sick and more than 45 people had to be treated for poisoning.

Officers do not believe there any suspicious circumstances surrounding the alcohol that was made in Punjab province.

The man who made the drink is thought to be among the dead, said senior police official Bilal Kamyana in an interview with Reuters.

He added that the man had sold it in bags for around £5 each.

Alcohol is hard to obtain in mostly Muslim Pakistan but can be bought from licenced stores with a permit at a very high price. Because of this many poor Christians are forced to buy it illegally from home brewers.

Doctors say numerous people are still seriously ill in hospital in connection with this batch.
