Nike $3k 'Jesus shoes' sell out in minutes

24 pairs of the limited edition 'Jesus shoes', designed by Brooklyn-based creative label MSCHF were released online on Tuesday.

The re-purposed Nike Air Max 97s have been transformed to make several references to Jesus Christ, although Nike has no affiliation with the finished product.

The trainers' air bubble sole has been filled with 60ml of holy water that has been sourced from the Jordan River and blessed by a priest, to allow wearers to "walk on water", while a crucifix has been attached to one of the laces.

The Bible verse Matthew 14:25 is also referenced on the side of the shoe, together with a drop of red ink on the tongue of the trainer to symbolise the blood of Christ.

A link to the Catholic Church is also apparent in the form of a red sole - referencing the red Papal shoes traditionally worn outside by previous Popes.

Each pair of trainers has also been scented with frankincense.

MSCHF claims the concept behind the refurbished sneakers was to poke fun at the 'absurdity' of collaborations between businesses.

Speaking to the New York post, MSCHF's head of commerce Daniel Greenberg said: "We thought of that Arizona Iced Tea and Adidas collab, where they were selling shoes that [advertised] a beverage company that sells iced tea at bodegas.

"So we wanted to make a statement about how absurd collab culture has gotten," Greenberg added.

Greenberg went on to say that the label wanted to explore what a collaboration with "one of the most influential figures in history" would look like.

MSCHF have no plans to make further copies of the product, but brand founder Gabriel Whaley has hinted there may be a "second coming" in the future.
