Application submitted to turn nightclub into church

by Rachel Huston

A former nightclub in Hull could be turned into a church if planning permission request is accepted.

The Piper was a popular hotspot The building originally opened as the Monica Cinema in 1914 and was later transformed into The Piper Club in 1965. It catered for generations of clubbers prior to its closure in 2023.

But now there's a chance it could live on as a house of worship. Potter's House Church has submitted a 'change of use' application to Hull City Council.

Speaking to the BBC Reverend Peter Dua said: "We've outgrown the current building and we're looking for something bigger."

The congregation had outgrown its current venue in Alexandra Road, he explained.

"There's a lot of work to do, but we're looking forward to it."

If successful the building would be used for Sunday services, community projects, teaching and charity work. They are currently looking for alternative accommodation after the city council approved plans to turn the church's current premises back into a pool and snooker hall.

If successful with this application plans to adapt the location would begin later this year.
