‘We won’t burn in hell like you’: Nigerian politician blasts Kemi Badenoch over ‘empty churches’

by Heather Preston

A Nigerian politician has launched a scathing attack on UK Conservative minister Kemi Badenoch, accusing Britain of abandoning God and Christianity after she criticised her home country for its poverty and governance failures.

In her first major speech of the year, Badenoch painted a grim picture of her childhood in Nigeria, blaming its government for economic instability and highlighting the struggles of even well-off families.

"I grew up in a poor country, and I watched my relatively wealthy family become poorer and poorer and poorer despite working harder as their money disappeared with inflation," she said, using her experience to champion Conservative economic policies.

Her remarks sparked outrage in Nigeria, with Femi Fani-Kayode, a senior member of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), firing back in a furious post to his 1.3 million followers on X:

"I would rather live in ‘poor’ Nigeria than ‘rich’ Britain where Christians are derided, Muslims are hated, churches are empty," he wrote, accusing the UK of forsaking religious values.

"At least we hold fast to our Christian and Muslim values, we know God, and we will not burn in hell for eternity for trying to replace Him with our accursed arrogance, insolence, pride, and vanity, and our insatiable love and celebration of wealth and power."

He went even further, calling for Badenoch to be barred from the country. “Surely it is time to declare this insufferable creature persona non grata and ban it from coming to our shores.”

Fani-Kayode, who has been married four times - his most recent wife being 27 years his junior, has a history of making bold statements on social media. He criticised the UK for "pillaging wealth & stolen resources from India & Africa" and having the greatest history of "corruption, perversion, mass murder, genocidal acts & brutality." He has also reposted content from the likes of Matt Walsh, and Andrew Tate.

He recently congratulated Donald Trump on his presidency, asserting that it reflects "the awesome power of God" and the "triumph of good over evil".
