A convent in New York has embraced World Cup fever with Scotland’s Tartan Army.
The Carmelite Sisters for the Aged and Infirm opened their doors so that fan John Patrick Mallon could have a place to stay whilst he was in America for the games. It is the first time Scotland have made it to the group stages since 1998.
Keen to make their guest feel at home, the nuns entered into the football spirit by learning fan chants, including “Coming Down the Road” and “No Scotland, no party!”
“Thanks to the sisters’ kind and generous hospitality, I’ve been able to make it to the World Cup,” Mallon, co-founder of Catholic production company Sancta Familia Media, said. “We’re going to have a wee practice of some chants.”
The Carmelite order has Caledonian roots, having been founded in 1929 by Scottish-born Venerable Mother Angeline.
The video has gone viral, with fans commenting that the sisters are “absolutely brilliant” and like a “Scottish Sister Act”.
“Who else but the Tartan Army would get away with that?” one Facebook fan said.
