New bishop for conservative evangelicals

The Archbishop of Canterbury's proposal was put together following last month's vote in the General Synod which saw a change in law allowing female clergy to take on the senior roles.

After receiving approval from the Dioceses Commission, the plans will see the currently vacant role of Bishop of Maidstone made available for a man to become a 'flying' bishop, working alongside diocesan bishops across the country.

The person who takes the job will also act as a voice within the College of Bishops for conservative evangelicals.

He'll work with churches who have decided they're not comfortable working under a female bishop and will act as an Assistant Bishop in the diocese where the church is based.

Although the position is based in the Diocese of Canterbury the bishop would not be expected to participate in the life of the diocese.

Work will now start on appointing a clergyman to take on the role.
