Murder charge after shooting outside NI church

Bernard McGliney died from chest injuries after the incident which happened during a family wedding at St Mary's Catholic church in the village of Newtownbutler, Co Fermanagh.

The 63-year-old grandfather, from Co Longford in the Republic, was shot in the chest in front of his wife Brigid on Wednesday.

Patrick McGliney, 46, is accused of the murder moments before the Traveller wedding was due to start.

Appearing at Omagh Magistrates' Court Mr McGliney spoke only to confirm his name, address and that he understood the charge.

The judge was told how the accused voluntarily handed himself to police in Belfast earlier this week.

No application for bail was made and he was remanded in custody.

The wedding at St Mary's Church went ahead.
