Mexican priest charged with 'political meddling' in mayoral campaign

Mexico

Population: 122 million
Christian population: 120 million (82 per cent Catholic)
The Catholic Multimedia Centre has recorded 31 killings of priests since 2006
The country has a long history of anti-clericalism and in the past century the government officially and often violently suppressed church leaders

The priest conducted a Mass in the town of Chiautla that was attended by mayoral candidates.

Prosecutors claim that the priest and candidates tried to coerce voters during the Mass in 2015.

This is the first time a priest has been charged with "vote pressuring" in Mexico.

The priest and mayoral candidates involved could face a fine.

Mexico does not allow Church figures to endorse political candidates.

Anti-clerical laws in the Catholic majority country sparked the Cristero Rebellion in 1926 in which thousands of people were killed.
