May has what it takes to be PM, says Maidenhead vicar

Revd Margaret Bird spoke before the Tory leader arrived at Buckingham Palace on Thursday evening where she became Prime Minister after accepting an invitation from the Queen to form a government.

The Church of England's Area Dean for Maidenhead said Mrs has shown dedication in her church life and engaged with her local community, attending both large and small events, including the switching on of Christmas lights.

Speaking about her suitability for the role of Prime Minister, Revd Margaret Bird said: "I think she has got all of the qualities [needed for the role].

"Obviously, she comes from a Christian background, being the daughter of a vicar - which has been well-publicised - but her Christian faith seems to have continued into her work life as well. Hopefully, that will impinge on her duties as prime minister."

An Anglican who attends a church in Sonning, Theresa May previously said, while her faith is not something to "flaunt ...in British politics", it is "part of me ...part of who I am."

Revd Margaret Bird said she believes Mrs May's Christian faith will help ground her at this important time, explaining: "It's quite difficult when you take on a top job, a new role.

"You have to become that person but there are times when you need some time on your own and to be yourself.

"Hopefully, she will find those [and] she will be able to use her faith to search those sort of places out where she will be able to continue reflecting."
