Maverick City Music big winners at the Grammys

by Donna Birrell

Maverick City Music have become big winners at the Grammys.

The Christian worship collective with Kirk Franklin won in all four Christian categories - Best Gospel Performance/Song (“Kingdom” feat. Naomi Raine & Chandler Moore), Best Contemporary Christian Music Performance (“Fear is Not My Future” feat. Brandon Lake & Chandler Moore), Best Contemporary Christian Music Album (“Breathe”) and Best Gospel Album (“Kingdom Book One” Deluxe).

The Maverick City Music label was launched in 2018, as a result of song-writing camps which brought together over 100 Christian artists and songwriters.

Last year they became the first Gospel artists in 20 years to perform during the televised Grammys ceremony.

Tennessee State University Marching Band also made history at last night’s event in Los Angeles, becoming the first band from a historically black university or college to win a Grammy. The band won the Grammy for Best Roots Gospel Album with ‘The Urban Hymnal’.

Away from Gospel, Beyonce has become the most decorated Grammy artist of all time - winning four awards overnight - and taking her career total to 32.

Among her trophies were: best dance album for "Renaissance", while two tracks "Cuff It" and "Break My Soul" were also recognised.

Lizzo won record of the year for "About Damn Time".

There's been British success, too - Harry Styles' album "Harry's House" bagged two awards, as did rock duo Wet Leg, while Adele won best pop solo performance for "Easy on Me".

Sam Smith's track "Unholy" secured Best Pop Duo for his collaboration with Kim Petras, who became the first transgender person to win that award.

Kendrick Lamar won in three rap categories.
