Man dead in Philippines Pope march

It's thought almost a million people attended the parade in Manila to celebrate the upcoming visit by Pope Francis, well more than officials had planned for.

Massive crowds pushed and shoved their way to the front of others to try and get closer to the wooden Black Nazarene, a statue of Jesus Christ carrying a cross.

Catholics believe this has miraculous power.

The Vice Mayor of Manila, Francisco Moreno, confirmed that one man guarding the statue had died of a heart attack.

The Red Cross said it treated 986 people for cuts, bruises and dizziness.

Up to one million people joined or watched the procession, police said, but by late Friday evening numbers had fallen to 900,000.

Church leaders are expecting millions to come out for the January 15-19 papal visit.
