Lord John Sentamu recalls being stopped and searched ‘a number of times’ as he helped defeat a gov new search power

by Kelly Valencia

The former Archbishop of York, John Sentamu has shared his experience of being stopped and searched by police in London.

Speaking at the House of Lords, the independent crossbencher said that, on one occasion, he was stopped to check if some tins of paint he was carrying had not been stolen.

“When I asked the police, why, particularly when I didn't have my dog collar on as a vicar because I'd gone to B&Q to get some paint to decorate our house, they wanted to make sure that those tins of paint had not been stolen. I had to produce a receipt, and then I was let go.

“There were other occasions, it wasn't just a one off,” he said.

The 72-year-old also shared how on another occasion he was stopped and made to open the boot of his car.

“And as I was coming up from whatever I was opening, he suddenly saw my dog collar and the purple shirt and he went 'whoops'," he continued.

Lord Sentamu was speaking at the House of Lords as part of a Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Bill vote on a proposed new search power for police included in the Bill.

He was among peers who voted against the proposed amendment that would have made it easier for police officers to stop and search people who had a previous conviction for carrying a knife.

The proposed amendment was defeated by a 38 votes majority.
