Libby Lane beckons next generation of female clergy at conference

by Aaron James

Rt Rev Libby Lane, Bishop of Stockport (above), was the keynote speaker at the Discerning Women's Conference in Diocese of Blackburn on Saturday.

The event, targeted at women aged between 16 and 40, is encouraging younger females to consider a career in church work.

It's amid figures showing less and less are considering ministry. In 2015 there were 11 women under the age of 30 who were ordained, compared to 37 men.

It's thought concerns from some women over flexible studying and working could be part of the reason for the low numbers.

Rev Canon Fleur Green, who helped organise the Discerning Women's Conference, told Premier: "I think it's a bit of a worrying trend. Young women are not coming forward, and it's [the event] really looking at how this can be addressed, how people can be encouraged.

"There was a lot of young vocations, then over the years that has moved away to looking at more life experience, and people feel they have to have lots and lots of life experience. In a way, young vocations have slipped through a gap."
