Lawyers seek injunction to block deportation of Oasis Trust Academy student

Lawyers have lodged court papers to block the deportation of Oasis Trust student Yashika Bageerathi.

They want an emergency injunction to give the 19-year-old from north London more time to take her case to the Court of Appeal. Meanwhile, the founder of the Oasis Trust has called on the global Church to intervene in the case of the Academy student who is facing deportation from the UK to Mauritius at 9pm tonight.

Revd Steve Chalke says 19-year-old Yashika Bageerathi, who attends one of his Oasis Trust school's in Hadley in north London, says she's already been taken to Heathrow, and is very distressed.

Revd Chalke believes her life could be at risk if she is forced back into the country, where she's reportedly faced death threats. The promising A-Level student's facing deportation without her mother and family, who are also facing being returned to Mauritius at a later date, despite a high profile campaign calling for her to be allowed to stay.

In a last ditch attempt at a reprieve, Revd Chalke has called on the Home Secretary, Theresa May, to stop the deportation.

Revd Chalke told Premier's Victoria Laurence that if the teenager has to leave, he's wants the Church both here and in Mauritius to work together to ensure her safety.

The campaign to keep her in the UK has drawn more than 175,000 signatures to an e-petition in support of the promising student who is due to sit A-level exams.

Tory MP and Christian, David Burrowes has also raised Miss Bageerathi's case in the House of Commons where he pleaded with the government to allow the teenager to finish her A-levels before any decision is made about her future.

Since applying for asylum, her application has been treated separately from her mother, sister and brother as she is considered an adult.

The teenager, who's been described as a maths genius, attends the Oasis Academy Hadley - an Oasis UK academy school founded by Revd Chalke.

According to a petition page set up by her school, Miss Bageerathi arrived in the UK along with her mother and brother in 2012, to escape abuse and danger.

In that time it says she has proved herself a model student and valuable member of the Enfield community.

In a statement to Premier, a Home Office spokesperson said: "The UK has a proud history of granting asylum to those who need it and we consider every application on its individual merits.

"We do not routinely comment on individual cases."
