Kenyan Anglican church revokes priest's license over gay sex allegations

by Hannah Tooley

Four others have also been suspended over the allegations.

The church created a diocesan tribunal after the four men, all over 18, claimed they were tricked into gay sex by senior clergymen, according to The Washington Post.

The Washington Post also reported that the men are married with families.

Bishop Joseph Kagunda, from the Diocese of Mt. Kenya West, said after the verdict: "I feel pain about this knowing (Kenyan) Anglican bishops have been very clear that they are against the gay practices."

He said the tribunal found one of the men guilty and stripped him of his clergy credentials.

A number of the priests confessed and received suspensions ranging from three months to three years - one was suspended indefinitely.

All of the priests were working in central Kenya, in the Mount Kenya West Diocese. The area has a large Anglican population.

Bishop Kagunda said "They have a right to appeal.

"We are also giving them an opportunity to repent and reform their ways."

In the conservative Anglican province, church leaders reject homosexual practices and say it is against biblical teaching.
