The Christian apologist Josh McDowell announced that he is stepping back from his ministry after making controversial remarks on race.

In a tweet posted on Wednesday evening, Josh McDowell announced that he was taking a temporary break from speaking and leading his ministry.

"At a recent conference, I made comments about race, the Black family, and minorities that were wrong and hurt many people." Josh wrote.

"It breaks my heart to know that deep pain I have caused. It has become clear to me, along with Cru Leadership, that I need to step back from my ministry and speaking engagements to enter a season of listening and addressing the growth areas that I have become aware of through this.

"During this time of meeting with others and learning, I hope to personally grow and better understand how I can help contribute to the reconciliation and unity that God desires for us all."

Josh stated that his CEO Duane Zook would take over for the time being and has not commented on how long he would be away from ministry.

McDowell drew controversy last weekend when he made comments at a counseling conference about race, claiming that Black families did not emphasize education or security in raising their children. McDowell immediately withdrew his remarks on Sunday, apologizing for making such a generalisztion.

McDowell is the author of several best-selling Christian books, including More Than A Carpenter and Evidence That Demands a Verdict.
