Former Jersey priest convicted of child abuse

by Lydia Davies

A former Catholic priest in Jersey has been found guilty of historic child sex offences.

Piotr Antoni Glas, who once served in the island’s Catholic community, was convicted of three counts of gross indecency with a child, as reported by Channel103.

According to Detective Constable Caroline Foord, Glas abused his role as “an influential member of the Catholic clergy”, to manipulate and exploit the trust of his victim and others around him.

“This case highlights the serious nature of an abuse of authority," Foord said. “It underlines the importance of holding individuals accountable for their actions, regardless of their position or when the offences were committed".

She also praised the bravery of the survivor who reported the abuse, saying the victim had shown “a tremendous amount of courage".

Glas is expected to be sentenced in the coming weeks.
