World Athletics has said it will “remind” Great Britain of its rules on religious and political slogans after sprinter Jeremiah Azu wore a headband reading “100% Jesus” during the World Championships in Tokyo.
The 24-year-old wore the headband as he finished fourth in Sunday’s men’s 100m semi-final.
Although he missed out on a place in the final, Azu could still compete again in the men’s 4x100m relay, which begins on Saturday.
Under World Athletics regulations, athletes are banned from marketing religious or political slogans during competition.
According to the BBC, a spokesperson for the governing body said: “We are aware of the headband, and as he may compete in the relay we will remind the team ahead of competition of our regulations and of consequences.”
British Athletics has not yet commented on the matter.
Last year, Azu became the fastest Welshman in history, when he ran in wind-legal conditions, over 100m, in just 9.97 seconds.
