Jeffrey Donaldson, former Democratic Unionist Party leader (DUP), is being investigated by police over allegations he raped a woman inside the Houses of Parliament.
The disgraced politician, who had frequently spoken about his Christian faith, was sentenced earlier this month to 15 years in prison for a series of child sex offences. He is appealing the convictions.
The Metropolitan Police did not identify the former MP but confirmed it is investigating a report passed on by the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI).
A spokesperson said: “On Tuesday October 13, the Met received a report, referred to us by PSNI, relating to an allegation of rape in 2016, by a man now aged 63. The allegation relates to one victim who is being supported by specialist officers. The investigation is in its early stages. No arrests have been made and inquiries remain ongoing.”
The allegation, first reported by the Belfast Telegraph, relates to a woman from Northern Ireland who was reportedly invited for a tour of Parliament.
In June, Donaldson was found guilty of one count of rape, four counts of gross indecency and 13 counts of indecent assault against two victims when they were children, committed between 1958 and 2008.
He was a member of the Presbyterian Church in Ireland and often wore an Ichthys badge, the ‘Christian fish’.
