Sir Jeffrey Donaldson has appeared in Newry Crown Court today with his wife Lady Eleanor Donaldson, over historic sex offences.
The former Democratic Unionist Party leader and his wife - who are both Christians - were arrested on 28th March 2024 over sexual offences. Both arrived separately to attend a no bill hearing, where Eleanor sought to have two charges against her dropped.
Jeffrey, 62, was initially charged with 11 offences, while Eleanor, 58, was charged with four offences of aiding and abetting. After evidence was considered by the Public Prosescution Service, she was charged with one further crime, whilst he was charged with seven more.
The charges against the former DUP leader are one count of rape, four counts of gross indecency and 13 counts of indecent assault. He has pleaded not guilty to all charges.
Eleanor has pleaded not guilty to three charges, in addition to the two she is seeking to have dismissed.
Donaldson resigned as party leader in March, shortly before his arrest. He is living at a London address whilst on bail, and will be represented by top criminal barrister Kieran Vaughan KC.
