A prominent Iwerne camp leader has been accused of sexual abuse against women and girls.

Revd David Fletcher, who died in 2022, was on the staff of the Iwerne Trust and a member of the Titus Trust for more than 30 years.

The Church of England's National Safeguarding Team (NST) said information was received about the late vicar following the publication of the Makin review, which detailed abuse perpetrated by Iwerne leader John Smyth.

The allegations against Revd Fletcher have been reported to the police.

In a statement, the Church of England said:

"Following the publication of the Makin Review, the National Safeguarding Team and Diocese of Oxford received information of sexual abuse and coercive and controlling behaviour concerning the Revd David Fletcher (deceased) towards women and girls.

"Revd Fletcher led the Iwerne camps, in Dorset (1967-1986), and subsequently was rector of St Ebbe’s, Oxford (1986-1998). He was also known as 'The Honourable'.

"This has been reported to the police and was recorded as a crime.

"We thank those who have bravely come forward. Support has been offered to them."
