Iceland defends replacing cross with tick on hot cross bun

by Will Hobbs

Supermarket Iceland has drawn criticism for its decision to introduce hot cross buns adorned with a tick symbol instead of a cross, sparking debate over the sanctity of Easter symbols.

Traditionally, hot cross buns bear a cross to symbolise the crucifixion of Jesus and are consumed on Good Friday. However, Iceland defended its choice, citing customer preferences uncovered in research, with one-fifth of respondents indicating a preference for the tick symbol.

An Iceland spokesperson said: “We are not replacing or removing the cross from our traditional hot cross buns and they will always be available at our stores nationwide.

“We are always listening to our customers for feedback on our products and we were surprised that a fifth came back to say they would like to see a version with a tick.”

Nevertheless, the move has sparked disapproval from some quarters, particularly among right-wing politicians. Reform UK MP Lee Anderson criticised the decision as emblematic of "ridiculous virtual signalling," echoing calls to reclaim traditional values.

Conservative MP Sir Jacob Rees-Mogg questioned why anyone would buy "a frozen tick bun".
