TV and radio host Dermot O'Leary says his faith plays a part in everyday life.

The 50-year-old has been speaking to the Times ahead of the release of his sixth children's novel, Wings of Glory.

Referring to his busy life, he said: "After Kasper's (his son) had his story and gone to bed I'll cook dinner, then I do a couple of hours' preparation for the next day's show. I'm generally in bed later than I want to be but I make time for a little prayer, have a word with the man upstairs.

"Faith has always been a way of bringing people together in the Irish immigrant community. I remember all of us heading up to Colchester for Mass when I was a kid, meeting up with friends and family, then loads of us congregating at some pub for a Sunday carvery. Faith is part of my everyday life and it's a wonderful feeling — a lovely reminder of my homeland."

O'Leary was raised a Catholic and attended Christian youth group Boys Brigade as a child. He's often spoken of the impact his faith has had on his life.

In a 2011 interview with the Guardian, he said: "My faith is very important to me but it's also something that I constantly question."

O'Leary rose to fame as part of Channel 4's output to young people, T4.

He would later host The X-Factor, one of the UK's most popular shows. More recently, he can be seen on ITV's This Morning and heard on his BBC Radio 2 show.
