Head-first baptism video goes viral

by Aaron James

Patriarch Ilia II has been roundly criticised for the way in which he's been baptising the children (below), with people calling his methods "cruelty", "abuse", "evil", "shameful" and "insane" in the comments section.

News agencies including Euronews have also been covering the baptisms:

According to AP, 600 children were baptised in Tbilisi Trinity Cathedral last week as part of the country's drive to increase the birth rate.

Patriarch Ilia II is baptising every third child of Orthodox families, and every child thereafter, to encouragement parents to have more kids.

He becomes a godfather to every one and since the initiative began in 2008 he now has 29,000 godchildren.

Georgia is approximately 78 per cent Christian.

In a world of fake news there’s never been a greater need for quality Christian journalism. Premier’s mission is to provide the Church with the most up to date and relevant news, told from a Christian perspective. But we can’t do it without you.

Unlike many websites we haven't put up a paywall — we want to keep our journalism free at the point of need and as open as we can. For a monthly gift of $11 or more we’d also be able to send you a free copy of the brand new Premier Bible, a wonderful Anglicised version of the NLT packed with exclusive bonus content, reading plan and resources to help you get the most out of scripture.

Your monthly support will make a world of difference. Thank you.
